Best land management practices are sets of methodologies designed to maximize production efficiency while minimizing environmental impact from crop production. They can include methods of minimizing dust production, use of non-conventional practices (such as application of biochar to farmland), irrigation management programs focus on quantifying crop water needs and developing efficient water delivery systems, and crop production programs to establish nutrient requirements. In the Southwest, it's critical to consider remediated mines or other disturbed areas for land management, as they require special attention for the presence of contaminants and heavy metals.
